Colorful Chemistry

The Center for Growth and Innovation offers a Chemistry course that packs in a full year of material into a month-long intensive course. During the course, the students have the opportunity to participate in awesome labs — like the one today!

This week, students are learning about the makeup of different chemicals. They have been discussing different properties and elements of each, and today they got to test one. Students looked at the reactivity of chemicals to fire. They recorded the color and size of the flame once the chemical was exposed to it.

The colors ranged from deep red to bright green. With these discoveries, students discussed what these chemicals were used for. They talked about how fireworks are made from a lot of these chemicals. The copper sulfate created a green flame, so to make green fireworks, you add copper sulfate!

Students are doing some great work this week. We love to see them excelling and applying concepts to the real world. Keep up the hard work!
