Mess Fest with The Franklin Institute

That’s right, this week at CGI, messiness is encouraged! Young scientists have gotten messy in the science lab with a variety of experiments. They have mixed, poured and slimed their way through chemistry and biology experiments.

This program is made possible by a partnership with The Franklin Institute and today, campers had a special visitor. The guest educator put on an awesome show for the campers. Campers learned about different elements and how they act as solids, liquids and gases. They discussed boiling points and used the example of nitrogen.

Liquid nitrogen is ‘comfortable’ at -320 degrees so when it is exposed to the 70-degree temperatures at camp, it boils. After discussing the science of the molecules in different temperatures, they put it to the test!

First, they looked at the what happens when you dip a helium balloon in liquid nitrogen. They guessed it would deflate, and they were right! There was a surprise though — after they took the balloon out of the nitrogen, it blew back up! Campers were fascinated by the experiment.

After the balloon experiment, the instructor showed the campers several other displays of liquid nitrogen in action. Campers loved having The Franklin Institute visit, they are always eager to learn.
